We are so used to this odd-sounding phrase many believe the economy actually will grow like a carrot if we work hard enough. Seed the idea, believe the sound bites and savor the flavor.
Or, is this a plant system about to be chewed off at the root by greedy insects? Free trade agreements, outsourcing of jobs, offshore banking, lower corporate tax rates, industrial blight, and unenforced immigration policies provide buds at the top of a gangly piece of greenery blowing in the wind.
To actually 'grow' the economy, elected officials are wise to remember who they represent not who pays to keep them in office. It is root systems that drive the true economy. Living wages allow more seeds to nurture more plants.
An anemic root system cannot be bullied into providing nutrients it does not have.
